Note on Self-Service App
Posted on 07:47 by Unknown
There were several inquiries yesterday from students at the MOB2 concerning downloading Lion through the Self-Sevice app. I spoke with our Mac guru here at IC and he stated that Lion will not be available on self-service until after finals.
If you haven't already had it installed, please contact the help-desk to get this invaluable app installed on your Shenandoah issued Mac laptop. With Self-Service you have the ability to install yourself with just a click many popular and useful programs including MS Office 2011, iLife'11, VirtualBox (allowing you to have Windows on your Mac!) , IBM SPSS plus many others. Again contact the help-desk to request the app put on. If there are several of you who wouldn't mind gathering together during a lunch period, you can contact me at bbsupport@su.edu and I will try to accommodate.

If you haven't already, please go out to the apple store and download the new updated Bb Mobile app that's now available. The app runs on your iphone, ipad and ipod touch. (The app also comes in versions which run on Android and Blackberry). With the new app you can upload media as attachments to blogs, journals and discussions directly from their mobile device. Courses can also be marked as favorites so students can more easily manage the courses or organizations that they access most frequently.
We have done several Blogs in the recent past on using the app. Please search the Blog Archives for instructions on the use of the Bb Mobile app.

Create a Watermark on your Word Document
Posted on 06:19 by Unknown
If I send a Microsoft Word document which is a draft, I like to include a watermark. A watermark is faded out text or a background picture that shows on the page beneath your document text. The process for creating one is very easy. However remember that the watermarks won't show in Normal view. You need to be in Print Layout view to see them.
1. From the Office ribbon, click Page Layout.
2. In the Page Background group, click Watermark. A dialog will appear with images of common watermarks such as "Draft", "Urgent", "Confidential" and so on.
3. Click the watermark you'd like to use.
Your watermark will now appear on every page.
You can also add a nice faded picture in the background say of flowers or a coastline. Cheap and cool way to create your own personalized stationary! Play around with it!

Two Quick and Easy Word Tips
Posted on 07:05 by Unknown
Hide that Ribbon!
For many of us, the ribbon interface (illustrated above) used in Word is a great step forward, while others find it somewhat overwhelming. If you fall into the latter category, you'll be happy to know that the ribbon can be temporarily hidden to provide you with a larger working area and clear away the clutter. How? Simple...just click one of the buttons highlighted in red below.
Remove the formatting
If text has been formatted and you change your mind about how it should appear, click the word in question, or select a section of text, and press [Ctrl]+[Space] simultaneously. If the formatting has been applied with a style, press [Ctrl]+[Shift]+[N] and it will then revert to the default style.

Speak, Mac, Speak!
Posted on 06:20 by Unknown
This is a fun (and possibly useful) Mac function you may not have been aware of. You can make your Mac Talk to you. Whether you wish it to tell you what time it is or read that term paper you have written back to you, Mac Speech is a neat little utility!
You access Speech by clicking your apple on the upper left and choosing System Preferences> Speech. (Near the center on the 4th row) . When you open up the application you can choose the gender of your Mac Speech voice by clicking the dropdown next to system voice and if you click More Voices it will give options for some special effect type voices.
Clicking Speak selected text when the key is pressed gives you the ability to hear what you have typed (or read to you from an article on the Internet! )All you have to do is click the Set Key button and define the keystroke that will kick off the text reading. (I use Control Option S)
Have fun making your mac talk.

Test and Quiz Tips!
Posted on 10:53 by Unknown
The following are some tips and items you should be aware of when taking tests or quizzes through SU's Blackboard System.
Be aware of timeouts. Blackboard times out after 90 minutes of inactivity. Your Internet Service Provider may time out sooner with no activity. Make sure you save your answers as you move through the test, so you can avoid losing everything if your service times out or your connection is lost.
Read the test directions carefully. The Instructor generally places test instructions under the test link. Information about the timing and availability of the test will be listed below the professor’s directions. Take note of whether the questions are delivered “All at Once” or “One at a Time”:
• All at Once: If all of the test questions appear on the page at once, the Save Answer button will appear next to each question. Click Save Answer after you complete each question. You can come back later and change the answer and re-save it.
• One at a Time: In this mode, you will have to click Save Answer after each question in order to move ahead with the test. Make sure you check the directions to find out if you will be allowed to go back and review the questions once they have been completed. Sometimes, a professor will give you one chance to answer a question without allowing you to go back and change it.

"Finish" the test. Once you have finished answering the questions, click the Save All button to make sure all your answers are saved, and then click the Finish button to submit the test. (Clicking the Save All button will save your answers, but does not submit the test.) If you do not submit the test, you will receive no credit for your answers. You should see a confirmation message if the submission was successful.
Additional way to Protect Your Data
Posted on 07:46 by Unknown
I checked out a program over the weekend called Truecrypt which has the dual advantages of being multi-platform (Windows & Mac), and being free. It can work as either computer-based or run from the flash drive (the latter being Windows only). It’s a very powerful encrypting program that has many high-level capabilities, but once you learn to use the interface (it has very good step-by-step instructions), it is quick and easy to use. As with the Office documents, you will need to record your password since it cannot be recovered if you lose it! Go to http://www.truecrypt.org to download and read the very simple instructions on how to use!

Important Security Update for your Macs!
Posted on 13:44 by Unknown
There are known vulnerabilities in Java for Mac OS X that are currently being exploited by malware through certain web sites. If infected with this malware, sensitive data could be transmitted from your Mac to others.
Apple this week released a patch that plugs the security holes and it is available in Software Update. All Macs at SU are running Java and need to be updated. It is very important that you run Software Update on your Mac as soon as possible and install all available updates.
To run Software Update:
1. Click the Apple menu at the top left of your display
2. Choose Software Update and your Mac will check for available updates
3. Click Continue, or Install, to install the updates.
After the updates have installed, Software Update will check again for any additional updates and, if available, you should install those as well.

Before you Walk Away from Your Mac....
Posted on 10:41 by Unknown
It's always a VERY good idea to lock your Mac screen when you walk away even for a minute or two. There are probably files and data you would rather the whole world not be able to access!
A simple way to protect your files when you walk away from your computer is to hit Shift-Command-Option-Q to do a fast logout of your user. Your Mac will go back to the login screen. However, there’s a huge downside to this method—all of your currently-open documents will close, and any running applications will quit prior to the logout.
A relatively quick method of locking your Mac—while still leaving your programs running—is to activate the screen saver using a hot corner . To do this, open the Desktop & Screen Saver System Preferences panel (by clicking the apple in the upper left) , activate the Screen Saver tab, and click the Hot Corners button. Decide which corner of your screen you’d like to use, then click the corresponding pop-up menu and select Start Screen Saver. Now when it’s time to walk away, just fling your mouse into that corner of the screen, and you’ll trigger the screen saver.

What is a Mashup?
Posted on 10:44 by Unknown
Note: Your instructor controls if the Mashup tool is available. If it is not available your instructor may have disabled it.
A Mashup combines elements from two or more sources. When you view a YouTube™ video in a Blackboard Learn course as part of the course content, you are experiencing a Mashup.
Mashups can also include Flickr® photos, SlideShare presentations, and Pasting from Word.
You can use this content in a variety of ways within a course: a standalone piece of content, part of a test question, a topic in a Discussion Board, or as part of an assignment.
Mashups are added through the Text Editor.
Default Mashup Types
Flickr: A website for viewing and sharing photographic images.
SlideShare: A website for viewing and sharing slide presentations and documents
YouTube: A website for viewing and sharing online videos.
Paste From Word . This has been mentioned several times in our blog as it is VERY IMPORTANT to remember not to cut and paste from word directly but rather paste into this mashup. If this mashup is not used then XML formatting included with new versions of Word will corrupt the course content.
How to Create a Mashup Item Using the Text Editor
1. Navigate to an assignment, journal, or other piece of content.
2. On the Upload Assignment page, click Add Mashup in the third row of Text Editor functions.
3. Select Flickr Photo, SlideShare Presentation, YouTube Video, or Paste from Word.
4. On the Search for Mashup pop-up window, search for content. Type the content name in the Search box and click Go.
5. On the Search Results page, you can click Preview to examine the items, or click Select to include
6. On the Create Mashup Item page, change the Name of the item. This is a required field.
7. Set the Mashup Options.
8. Click Submit.
