Posted on 11:36 by Unknown
Want to look and feel like somebody who knows everything?  Ok, Faust, I have some great information for you.

Shenandoah University has access to thousands of online tutorials that teach you all about any kind of software that you might encounter.  From Photoshop to Garageband and anything in between.

Atomic Learning has all the information you could possibly need to complete whatever software related task you can think of. There are a few ways to get to Atomic Learning through Blackboard:

  1. Go to the Academics tab and look under "Bb Tools" there will be a link that says "Atomic Learning."
  2. Go to the "Tech Support" tab, and directly under the main tab will be a sub tab that says "Atomic learning."
  3. Go to the "24/7 Trainer" tab and click the image on the left side of the screen that says, "Technology Training Tutorials." This way to access Atomic Learning will not have you automatically logged in, so you will have to input your information.

Recording from Webcam inside Blackboard!

Posted on 13:01 by Unknown
One of my favorite features about Blackboard is that you can easily and efficiently record videos with your webcam and have them automatically upload to YouTube.  In fact, anywhere you can edit text you can actually just embed a recording of you speaking from a YouTube video in the text's place.

I would highly recommend that before you try to submit a video response, you ask your professor if that is an acceptable practice for his/her course.

How to record from webcam via Blackboard:
  • Find any spot in Blackboard for inputting text. On the right side of the text editor will be a double chevron.
  • Click the double chevron.  In the bottom left of the new text editing view, there will be a small red target.
  • Once you press this button, you will be able to record from webcam
Don't forget to setup YouTube to work with your SU email!

Best Free apps for SU Students

Posted on 07:59 by Unknown
After spending a lot of time browsing through various tech blogs about which apps are best for college students, I felt like pulling out my increasingly graying hair.  There are so many valuable apps out there that I felt like it was IC's turn at giving you a list of quality apps that SU users can use for free.

Keep in mind, we have our own app store called "Self-Service"  that all of the apps contained within are free to students.  Many of these apps are not actually free, but for SU students they are, so these apps will be included in this list.

Let's do this:
  • Evernote -- An app that allows you to organize all of your thoughts, interesting information, tasks, and various other snippets that you want to hold onto.  You can access Evernote across all of your devices, and it has an extremely easy interface to navigate.

  • Skype -- Needless to say, Skype is on the list because of its very simple interface, and its extraordinary functionality.  Face to face communication, for free, with anybody across the world is a breeze with Skype.

  • Penultimate -- A creative note taking program that will allow you to use your iPad as a blank piece of paper.  Feel free to use a stylus with Penultimate, and create hand-written notes and store them directly to Evernote.  The Penultimate / Evernote combo is one of the most potent app combos for students

  • Google Drive -- At SU we use a lot of Google applications.  Google Drive is one of the apps that we most commonly use because of its downright convenience.  Want to store a doc forever that everybody in your group can modify to perfection?  Want to store a photo album that nobody else but you can see?  Google Drive is going to be perfect for you.

  • Mint -- A simple way to keep track of your delicate college finances.  Hookup your bank account information to Mint and you will get a wealth of spending habit information, budget tracking, and other easy to access financial information.

  • Keynote -- Many feel as though this is the best app for making slide-shows. The slides are designed to look pretty sleek and professional, and the interface is clean and comfortable for users of all skill levels.

  • Duolingo -- Lots of people have a pretty easy time learning foreign languages.  If you are not one of those people, Duolingo is a phenomenal and free way to get a little extra help with whatever language you need assistance with.

  • Pages -- Considered by many to be the highest quality word processors for iPad, Pages will allow you to create, edit, and view documents wherever you are.

  • Numbers -- Not all classes will require you to work with spreadsheets.  Those classes that will have you working with spreadsheets, Numbers will, most likely, be an incredibly useful app.

  • Gmail -- With notifications for each email your receive and lots of options to customize your inbox, the Gmail app should prove invaluable for all of you.  Make sure to have this one downloaded so that you never miss an important email again!
Without a doubt if you download and use these apps effectively, you will, in some way, increase your ability to work more efficiently at SU.

The Who What Where When and Whys of IT help at Shenandoah University

Posted on 10:02 by Unknown
No, you can't use force powers to fix you MacBook
Everybody knows that IT problems can be confounding.  When you need help you are already most likely frustrated because, let's face it, serious IT problems are a major headache.  On top of the mounting frustration of on going computer woes, you are expected to go to the right people, at the right place, at the right time, and ask the right questions.  Believe me, I understand your pain.

Today's blog is all about mitigating as much of that IT frustration as possible. So, together, let's all take a collective deep breath, exhale, stretch-out something sore, and get ready to sift through the turbid haze of IT assistance. Once you learn how to get help efficiently, tech problems become way less worrisome. So let me share with you some tremendous SU resources.
This poor lil fella probably just needed some IC Help Desk love

What to do when problems arise:

Depending on the nature of your current situation, you might want to take a few different actions. So stop and think about what is going to work best for you and your schedule.

For example:

  •  Go to the Help Desk if you are on campus and have a few spare moments, you can strut over to Howe Hall room 112 and get immediate assistance.
  • Submit a work order if you find that you are so slammed that you could not possibly make it to Howe Hall. While your busy life is taking place, somebody in IC can help you handle your inquiry from behind the scenes without you waiting around.

IC Resources:

IC Help Desk
Howe Hall: Room 112
Phone: 540.665.5555
Email: Helpdesk@su.edu
If you happen to be at our Health Professions Building or our Northern Virginia campus, you're in luck because both sites also have a Help Desk

Submit a work-order.
A great feature about the work order system is that there is a paper trail left behind whenever a work order is submitted.  Why it is a great feature is that the entire processed is tracked and monitored so that all inquiries are handled in a timely and coherent fashion. Additionally, after enough work orders are filed and resolved, a well-organized F.A.Q. section will emerge with answers to common problems which will be tremendously beneficial to others.

Additional IC resources:

In the rear entrance of the Smith Library, you can access the Institutional Computing office and find a gentleman by the name of Devon Taylor at the first office on the right.  Devon's job is to help SU users interface better with technology.  If you're curious about how to make Gmail work a little bit more efficiently or need to know how to use your iPad more effectively, then Devon is going to be a great resource for you.

If you have issues with Blackboard prior to log in, you need to seek out help from the Help Desk.  If you have issues with Blackboard after log in, you need to submit a work order to receive help.

Make Sure to Enroll in The Business Office Organization

Posted on 12:27 by Unknown
As a student this year, each one of you will be responsible for self-enrolling in the Business Office Organization.  If you do not enroll, you are going to miss out on a bunch of important information, such as:
The cuteness is strong with this one
  • Refund Check Information
  • Parking Pass Deadline Information
  • Tuition Information
Enrolling in the Business Office Organization is easier than saying, "awwwwe." when you see an eight week old basset hound sleeping peacefully with his little puppy-paws up on the armrest of a chair.

How to enroll in the Business Office Organization:

    • From the “My Bb” page click the center tab that says “Administrative”
    • Enter the words “Business Office” and click “Go” in the “Organization Search” bar
    • In the next screen put your mouse over the organization name, a chevron will appear.  Click the chevron.
    • A drop down list will appear and it will say “Enroll” click Enroll and then on the following page click “Submit”

Using IFTTT or If This Then That

Posted on 10:48 by Unknown

Today we are defying the age old wisdom set before us in the 1984 film "Ghostbusters." That's right folks, today we are crossing the streams.

The topic of today's blog is a great website and mobile application that you can use to cross many of your favorite social networking and common applications to create brilliant synergies. The website I am writing about is called, www.ifttt.com, and it stands for "If This Then That." Sure the name is a little peculiar, but the service is incredibly useful.

There are tons of ways that you can uniquely make recipes to cross some of your favorite programs.  Want a tweet to be sent out whenever you upload a photo to Instagram?   How would you enjoy receiving a text message every time it starts to rain, or when the temperature drops below freezing?  Want to automatically have chess tips tweeted daily (a personal favorite) or sent to your Dropbox? These are all things that you can setup in ifttt, but really the custom combinations you can make are almost endless (I am not a statistician so I am just assuming that statement is somewhat true).  Additionally, there are hundreds upon hundreds of pre-made recipes that you can browse, or you can just create your own from their user friendly interface.

If you spend a little bit of time creating a few recipes I guarantee you will find an incredibly useful combination that you will use over and over again.

Make Sure to Edit Your Blackboard Profile

Posted on 08:52 by Unknown
Instead of integrating some of our academic features with social networking sites that you most likely use, Shenandoah has decided to separate business from pleasure by embracing the features of Blackboard Profile.

This is one of the newer features to Blackboard; this year, you certainly want to have your Blackboard Profile information edited and current.  There are a lot of features in Blackboard that are going to require you to submit information, and if your Blackboard Profile is up-to-date it will allow the people who are reading your submissions to know more information about you.

Editing your Blackboard Profile is easy. Here is an explanation about how to edit your Blackboard Profile:

  • Go to your "My Bb" page
  • Click the "Avatar" image in the top left corner
  • Hit the "Edit My Blackboard Profile" button
  • Edit the relevant information and set your privacy settings and click submit

The Blackboard Retention Center: An Insider's Secrets

Posted on 07:34 by Unknown
It may be the case that some of you know what the Blackboard Retention Center is, but I think it is most likely that very few of you have ever heard of it.  So I figured I'd post you some inside information.  Get ready to protect me for whistle-blowing. Hopefully I will not have to spend the next several months in the Moscow airport.  Only time will tell.

It's weird how the IC department staff looks so edgy these days
Blackboard Retention Center is the primary tool that instructors will use to keep tabs on the students who have been doing well and those who have been performing poorly. Think of it like Santa's "naught and nice" list. Yes, that's right, professors can totally Big-Brother you with the Blackboard Retention Center.

The Retention Center is all about the students' academic activity. A professor can log on, see who has been frequently absent from class, not participating, neglecting to log into the Bb system (make sure you have SU's Mobile app so you can access our Bb Mobile Learn on all of your devices so this never becomes a problem).  In fact, the system is so sophisticated that Blackboard automatically warns the professor of students who are failing to uphold their academic obligations.  Furthermore, with a single click, the professor can form an email to all of the students who are lacking behind in various categories, and shoot them a "get your stuff together" email.

If knowledge is power, then with the video provided below, you might be able to end America's dependency on foreign oil.

Blackboard Mobile Learn

Posted on 06:31 by Unknown
Blackboard Mobile Learn will work across your IOS and Android devices
Most of you already know that Blackboard has gone mobile. What many of you may or may not know is that here at Shenandoah University we Blackboard our own way.  If you want your Blackboard Mobile Learn to work, download Shenandoah University's Mobile app.  Once you have our app installed just hit the Blackboard Learn icon and log into Blackboard as usual!

Blackboard Mobile Learn will be infinitely valuable to all of you that depend largely on Blackboard to make it through your day-to-day activities here at Shenandoah University. The app itself does a great job transferring the most valuable information from your Blackboard into a mobile format.

The interface of the mobile app is pretty simple, but varies slightly depending on which platform you are using.  After searching the internet for a bit, I collected a few excellent Youtube tutorials from Blackboard inc (Keep in mind, these tutorials come from the stock Blackboard Mobile app, and Shenandoah's version varies slightly).

Blackboard Calendar Basics

Posted on 06:26 by Unknown

Seriously, I can barely tell the difference, but then again, I'm new
At SU, we are all considered to be pretty lucky.  We have world class professors, a campus that looks a tad like Rivendell (home of the house of Elrond and the High-Elves of Middle-Earth in Lord of the Rings for you non-nerds out there), plenty of delicious food in the cafeteria, and an Institutional Computing department that pulls out all the stops when it comes to the success of this university's students.

In order for you to become a hyper-successful student at SU, you are going to need to do a bunch of stuff. Most of that stuff, the IC department cannot help you with, but when it comes to interfacing with the university through technology, that is where we come in.  One of our most important tasks is making the ins-and-outs of Blackboard easy to understand and accessible for all of you.

Today we will take a look at one of the more important features for your success: the Blackboard calendar.
The Blackboard calendar will most likely become an integral part of your day-to-day academics.  Luckily, it is a high quality tool that is pretty easy to use and navigate effectively.

Some of the most handy features about the Blackboard Calendar are as follows:

As your professor makes changes, your calendar will change. That's right; when your professor changes an assignment, due date, or adds and removes events so will your course's calendar reflect that information.  The calendar will populate in this way automatically for any courses you are enrolled in.

Hiding unwanted calendars is a breeze.  Too much visual clutter in your Blackboard calendar?  I can sympathize with you.  At any given time, it seems like I have eight calendars overlapping making sure that I know that I have way more to accomplish in a day than there are hours.  But no matter, I will simply hide a calendar or two that are not too important to reduce the visual clutter.

(For some of the more simple features, if I do not include written step-by-step instructions, check the links provided in the text, and it will direct you to an online photo, photo album, or video with relevant information that should show you exactly how to do what I am writing about. Go ahead, check it out!)

Adding events to your Blackboard calendar is quick and painless. To add an event, all you need to do is click on the calendar itself where you would like the event to be scheduled.  A window will appear that wants a little more detail about the event. Fill out the information, and presto-chango, you have yourself a completely detailed event.

Exporting your Blackboard calendar is easier than getting knocked out by Mike Tyson in his prime. Also, it is easier than crashing your car while texting. Seriously, don't text and drive. To export your calendar you want to go to your Blackboard calendar and hit the "Get External Calendar Link" button at the bottom left portion of your Blackboard calendar page.
  • Once you have the External Calendar Link paste that information into your Browser's URL bar
  • You will then be prompted to download the calendar.  Download it and then place it on your desktop
  • Go to your Google calendar, find the "other calendars" drop down menu in the bottom left corner of the calendar, and hit the "import calendar" button.
  • Hit the upload button and you're done!

    Maintaining Your Smartphone

    Posted on 06:35 by Unknown
    Tristan's Smartphone reporting for duty
After I went home from work yesterday, I did a few errands, and then eventually went home.  Like most nights, I sent some text messages to my friends to see if anybody wanted to grab a bite to eat or come over to watch some Netflix.  While I was texting, I noticed that my keyboard was slowing down significantly.  I figured one of two things was happening:

    1) I text too fast for my phone
    2) I have not been maintaining my phone properly so it is slowing down.

Since I do not text at blazing speeds, I'm going with the latter of the two.  This prompted me to go on a late night internet quest to find out some useful resources for maintaining your smartphone's performance.

Here are some of the most logical and best tips I have found so far:

    1) Keep your phone charged properly. Generally you want to wait until your battery is pretty low before you charge it all the way back to full.
Not even the 6th tip will help this 'lil fella

    2) Keep your phone cool.  You can actually lose a pretty significant amount of performance if your phone gets too hot.  Keep in mind that a lot of the more durable cases can contribute to an increase in your phones temperature

    3) Be an application minimalist.  If you are the type of person that downloads every app under the sun, you might find that your performance suffers.  If you have a ton of apps, make sure that the apps you are not using are turned off.  A great way to make sure peripheral applications are turned off is by using an app (go figure) called "Advanced Task Killer"  it's free and easy to use.

    4) Reset your phone daily.  I called the local Verizon store in Winchester to see if the representatives there had a few performance saving tips, and this is the primary answer I received.  The representative made it clear that your phone should stay off for about five minutes until the phone can recent its connection to the local towers.

    5)  Clear your smartphone's cookies.  These are little programs that assist marketing companies keep track of your browsing patterns so that they can collect some data from your browsing patterns.  All smartphones will have a way to clear out cookies.

How to clear cookies from an Iphone
How to clear cookies from a Samsung Galaxy s3

    6) Reset your phone to factory default settings.  This is your last resort.  When your phone is too clogged up and a complete wipe would save you more time and spare you from massive headaches, this is always the last option on the table. This will delete all downloaded apps, and restore your phone to its day one settings.

How to factory reset an Iphone
How to factory reset a Samsung Galaxy

I cannot stress this enough. If you factory reset, you are going to lose everything that is currently on your phone.

This post was not designed to shed too much light on battery saving, but I went ahead and found a really great tech blog about saving battery life.  With these easy steps, you should be able to keep your constant battery charging to a minimum.

    Why use Evernote?
