Setting your Privacy Options within Bb
Posted on 11:14 by Unknown
As a student you can decide what type of personal information can be seen by other course members. To set your privacy options click My Places at the top of your Bb page and then click Personal Information on the page that appears. On the Personal Information page click the link for Set Privacy Options. From here you can set what personal information is viewed , whether or not you want your information listed in the User Directory, email options and Roster options.
NOTE that your instructor will ALWAYS have access to your Name and Email.

How to Change your Menu Formatting
Posted on 07:52 by Unknown
Blackboard allows you the option two different menu views; List View (default view with either text menu or buttons) and Folder view. Both options are available by clicking the appropriate icons (1. and 2) at the top left of your page as illustrated below. The remaining icons are 3) Open in a new window and 4) Refresh. Feel free to set the menu up either way to suit your personal preference.
The following is an example of Folder view;

Pasting from Word Reminder
Posted on 07:44 by Unknown
Now that exams are starting you are reminded to Please NOT Copy and Paste Documents from Word into Blackboard!
Shenandoah has a "Paste From Word" mashup loaded so we need all student to use that instead.
The "Paste from Word" option preserves the text formatting and tables, but removes any
XML code that may be incompatible with the Blackboard application. The instructions for using this simple tool are below;
1) Copy your document from word using either edit>copy or the shortcut Cntl-C
2) From any text box in Bb (assignments, journals, etc) select the last icon (the Mashup Icon) on the bottom row/right side and choose Paste From Word from the dropdown. (See screen capture below).
3) After selecting, a text box page will open for you to paste your document. You can use the CNTL-V shortcut.
4) Click the Submit Button.

Be Prepared!

Along with testing and upgrading your browser as suggested in the last blog, it would also be a good idea to make sure all your software is updated and run your virus checker BEFORE you and that laptop go scrolling into that first exam.
Remember that the lastest Mac software, including McAfee, can be found by clicking the self-service icon found on the dock at the bottom of your Mac. The icon looks like this;

Test that Browser BEFORE Those Final Tests!
Posted on 09:34 by Unknown
There isn't too much time left in this Semester and it's about time for those finals. Don't get kicked out of your Bb tests by using an incompatible browser. If you click HERE you will be directed to an online browser checker to make sure your computer is all ready for those final exams (Hopefully YOU are already 'ready')!

Next Semester Add Your Picture (if you haven't already)!
Posted on 10:37 by Unknown
Many instructors like to see a picture of their students in the Bb Roster . It makes it easier for them to quickly match names to faces. Here's how to add your own avatar (photo) to your Bb profile.
It's as simple as that!
Please note that the recommended pixel size for an avatar is 150 by 150. Larger images will be clipped. If you have any questions about cropping or reducing larger photos to fix you can contact me at rgiersch@su.edu and I will be glad to help you.
- At the very top of your Bb page click the link that says "My Places".
- Click "Personal Information"
- Click "Personalize my Places"
- Click the Browse My Computer button to find and upload a picture of yourself
- Click Submit

No Cursing in Filenames Allowed!
Posted on 08:30 by Unknown
We all know how you curse in writing without really using any bad words...you string together a bunch of special characters i.e. $%#*#$#@!!! That's fine for writing emails...unfortunately it's NOT fine to put any of these special characters in a filename. Blackboard doesn't like special characters in filenames at all so just keep it simple. Choose a short alpha-numeric filename. If you want you can use an underscore but please don't use any special characters.
